What do you say? How do you say it? Since there will be champagne flowing freely, should you make an attempt at humor? These are all good questions. However, each wedding and each couple command different answers.
Not all guests who are asked to give wedding speeches are seasoned writers or orators. When asked to participate on any level, some people blanch and become riddled with anxiety because they are not comfortable with their writing or their presentation skills. This is when the smart person will begin searching for sample speeches others have used with success.
For example, there are quite a few sites that will give you a sample of a Maid of Honor speech:
“Hello, everyone, I am Allison and I have been Jane’s best friend since we were in grade school. I’m not going to tell you exactly how many years that it because too many of you know how to count. But we shared many little victories and secrets over the years. I was with her when we graduated from high school and college. I was with her when she got her braces put on and taken off. I have seen every emotion that Jane is able to feel and display.
I can tell you that I never saw the sparkle in her eyes like I saw when she told me she had met a guy named John. I saw that same sparkle every time she talked about him. The sparkle was mixed with tears when she told me he has asked her to marry him. And that sparkle was there today when she walked up the aisle to join hands with John.
Jane, my best friend, I love you so much. Today you are more beautiful than ever. You have that sparkle in your eyes. My wish for you and John is that the sparkle lasts a lifetime filled with happiness and joy – and of course at least three little ones that will reflect that sparkle in your eyes.”
If you have ever watched the movie “The Wedding Planner” with Jennifer Lopez, she was always out-of-sight with an ear wick feeding the words to the groom to say to his bride. Throughout the movie, it seemed she used the same successful speech for different grooms. Grooms are not immune to the writing and performing jitters that attack everyone else. Maybe he has the hottest seat in the house.
Professionals say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If you ‘borrow’ a wedding speech that someone else perfected, you are really giving kudos to that person for having done such an outstanding job!
